Habitat Gateway North Announces Affordable Housing Project in Sudbury
September 9, 2025

City of Greater Sudbury, ON – Thanks to land generously donated by the City of Greater Sudbury and the support of dedicated community and business partners, Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North will build a new affordable home at 416 Melvin Avenue. This project represents a collaborative effort to create safe, decent, and affordable housing, strengthening the neighbourhood and the broader Sudbury community.

“The City of Greater Sudbury is proud to support Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North through this donation of land at 416 Melvin Avenue,” says Kris Longston, General Manager of Planning and Growth, City of Greater Sudbury. “This initiative was made possible through our Affordable Housing Community Improvement Plan land banking strategy and demonstrates our commitment to creating inclusive, resilient neighbourhoods. By working together with community partners, we’re helping ensure that more families have access to safe and affordable housing.”

Kimberley Woodcock, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North, adds, “This project is powered by strong partnerships and built on shared goals and vision, and we’re building a foundation for better health, education, employment, and civic engagement in this community. We’re very excited to announce the launch of this build. It’s the first project we’ve undertaken in the region in far too long. This home represents for us the start of bigger affordable housing opportunities in the North.”

Local construction company, Wilson Hope Group, will lead the project design and delivery of the detached home. “As proud members of the Sudbury community, we are truly honoured to be part of this important project with Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North,” says Wilson Hope CEO, Jay Quesnel. “One of our greatest values is giving back, and we believe that when families have safe, stable homes, the whole community grows stronger. By partnering with Habitat, we are helping to create opportunities that bring people together, build brighter futures, and strengthen the fabric of our city. We’re grateful to stand alongside an organization that shares our commitment to community, compassion, and creating real, lasting change.”

Michael Cullen, Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North’s Director of Community Partnerships, agrees. “This project is rooted in community connections and a shared understanding of the urgent need for affordable housing in the North. Strong partnerships are essential to ensuring affordable housing can grow and thrive.” Contributions from Desjardins, 3rd Line Studio, Kusnierczyk Realty Group, modular home builder Mezza, and Lacroix Lawyers have laid a strong foundation, but additional fundraising is essential for the success of this project.”

To help offset market barriers and rising building costs, Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North welcomes cash donations at the Sudbury ReStore, located at 2167 Armstrong Street, or online by visiting www.habitatgatewaynorth.com/donate.
