A home in the community of Magnetawan represents many firsts, and not solely for the family selected to take ownership of the home. Spearheaded by Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North (Ontario Gateway North) and its Magnetawan Chapter, the municipality’s first Habitat home represents a hand up for a local family. Built in partnership with Champoux Homes in Quebec, the home is Magnetawan’s first affordable housing project and the affiliate’s first-ever modular home. The history-making project was the result of the Municipality of Magnetawan, local businesses and a host of community members and volunteers coming together.
The municipality’s generous donation of land at 173 South Street in Magnetawan was a critical initial step for the project. Ontario Gateway North’s inaugural modular home successfully made its journey from Champoux Homes in Quebec to its permanent location on the property. The donation of land and the successful fundraising efforts of the Chapter reflect the community minded, family-driven spirit that defines Magnetawan.

The modular build is universally accessible and energy efficient, reducing monthly energy costs, greenhouse emissions, and the home’s carbon footprint, while increasing the efficiency of its systems. New Habitat homeowners Jamie and Rachel were thrilled to be selected and look forward to building a life together in the community. The completion of this home is a success story for everyone involved.
“Without the significant financial support and in-kind contributions from donors, the support of the community, and the committed volunteers of the Magnetawan Chapter, this project would not have been possible,” says Ontario Gateway North’s CEO, Kimberley Woodcock. “We are proud of what the Chapter and the community have achieved. This is just the beginning. I know the Chapter has plans to build more much needed affordable housing, and with the ongoing support of the local community, we know they can do it.”
